none of my moped blogs have been getting much love lately. i am currently one of three full time techs (one of which is out with a broken collar bone and the other who is moving away) at one of san francisco’s busiest motorcycle/scooter shops. i am also trying my best to run a moped repair shop out of a space i rent from said motorcycle shop, a repair shop that has yet to pay for itself since i opened it six months ago or so. needless to say, i haven’t had much time or spare money to work on my own bikes.
however, i miss them dearly, and hope to be back to working on them before too long. i have picked up a couple projects here and there when i did have a few spare bucks, not all of which are actually mopeds, but still awesome and totally worth posting here anyway.
my hope is that within the next couple months both this blog and the ciaociao blog will be back in action. i’ve got plenty of work to fill these pages, i just have to find the time to do it!
now i’m going to go and cross post this to the ciaociao blog.

cutter rally killed it

i don’t know what it killed exactly, but it’s dead.
such an awesome time. i spent the saturday ride driving chase in chad burke’s truck and still had a blast.
sunday i was riding lindsey doubles on sabatino’s race small frame and it was awesome.

the rally got me super stoked on mopeds again. i can’t wait to bust out these projects that i have building. i hope to have this blog rolling again with new and awesome stuff!

also, it was awesome having 4 people tell me randomly in one night that they read this dumb thing. makes me want to update it more often!

so i bought an 84 yamaha xv 700 from eric for $200 to build for the dirtbag challenge. the xv 700, better known as the virago, is a silly 80′s cruiser harley davidson wannabe, but people have done some neat things with them.

i’m not going to be doing a lot of chopping and welding, mostly because i don’t have access to those kinds of tools right now, but i have some plans for it.

it’s proving to be a fun project already!

sorry about that, i have been working 50-60 hour weeks, half at the motorcycle shop half at the moped shop, and have been too exhausted/busy to post anything over here in a while. i’m going to do my best to remedy that, though!
i mean, i’ve got plenty to blog about. i’ve got more than a couple super rad moped projects going on in the shop right now, even a couple of my own. more on those in another post, though.
plus, you might remember me posting about the dirtbag challenge last year, well it’s on again this year a lot of months earlier. and i think i’m building a bike. more on that also in another post, though.

one thing i will go into a tiny bit in this post is this little project i just picked up from bret hoffman.

it’s a 1977 foxi gt. it’s a super rad bike, it came with a sachs 504, but the frame was designed to accept a puch engine. the sachs engine is mounted with a crazy adapter bracket. needless to say, the 504 will be going in favor of an e50.

it’s got a sweet tank rack, more under-seat storage than a new tomos and new tires!
the tank needs some attention, but it’s not horrible.
here are some pictures of the engine in the frame, and one picture of it out of the frame where you can really see the adapter.

i’ve got some fun plans for this bike, but they are kinda secret, so i’m not going to super go into it here. if you really want to know, you can email me or something and i’ll probably tell you, but it’s nothing crazy or anything. just a puch build on a foxi.

ok, my break is over. back to working on mopets. i’ll try to do better about posting here, i have some fun things going on that i know at least some of you will be interested in hearing about.
i’m extra looking forward to posting about my dirtbag challenge build, if i actually get to do it.. if not, well, look forward to a post about the party later next month at least.

ps, anyone want a 504 engine with a to-puch-frame adapter? you could totally start a new super slow magnum fad!

a short post about the reno rally

it was awesome. ciao out did itself again. los dorados just put on probably my number one favorite rally of all time.
we had awesome rides, i ran out of gas a lot, there was a robot rock show, we shot guns and blew up bombs in the desert.
i’ll have photos and video for you soon, right now i gotta go open my moped shop.

gettin dirty

even though dirty won’t be making the reno rally (BUMMED.), i have been slowly picking away at it.
every little thing has been fighting me, just like the vx4 build. it took three different lower triple trees to find one that was long enough for a general top tank frame (tomos revival/streetmate), only to find out that it uses larger diameter fork tubes than your typical hydro ebr forks. wut.
your typical hydro ebrs use 28mm fork tubes, the revival/streetmate apparently uses 30mm fork tubes. i came up with a temporary ghetto fix for this by cutting a couple inches off the bottom of the the stock fork tube covers/headlight brackets (you can see the fork tube cover things in this photo) and taking a slice out of them vertically to get C shaped spacers. the steel is 1mm thick, and it wraps around the fork tubes, oh, 85% of the way, so it made everything nice and snug. i want to eventually make some spun aluminum spacers that do the same thing, only i’ll leave like 8cm of material sticking up above the triple tree so that i can carve the extra into a bubble lettered DIRTY with a dremel. THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!
here’s a couple pictures of what i have going on now. i left them long on purpose, mostly because i wasn’t sure how long they needed to be (it helps to take measurements before fabricating something) and didn’t even bother trying to make them straight.

as you can see, i also started sorting out the front brake and i threw the rear shocks on to see what the stance would be like (they are taller than stock, but so is the fork). i like it! i still have to modify that nos swing arm i have for it and get or make some adapters for the top of the shocks. you know, the inserts you put in the shock eye if your mount is a smaller diameter bolt than what your shock uses. i lost the plastic ones that came with the shocks, so i gotta get more.

oh, here are a few shots of my shop. i’m currently kind of crammed into less than half of my space, as the rest was being used for motorcycle storage up until yesterday. also, my space extends past that pile of elite scooters to that pillar you see next to them. i may be buying that bile of elites to fix n’ flip and/or part out, that’s why they are all crammed into my space. eventually walls will be up and work benches will be built. also, that fridge is getting moved out of my space too, though i fully intend to keep some beers in it.

this is a closer look at those elite 250s, +1 150 deluxe or something. and a zooma that i am not interested in.

so yeah, that’s the shop and everything as it sits. i bought some 2×4′s and a couple of narrow doors to make a work bench and a computer desk. later on i’ll be building walls to go around the whole area, and put in a door. maybe a couple windows to look out over the rest of the 2nd floor.
but that’s all future stuff. i’m still trying to sort out the now stuff!
